Cinnamon Sauce
This Cinnamon Sauce is incredibly easy to make. It literally takes just a few minutes and is delicious served in many different ways. If you live in Santa Cruz Co. AZ you may be familiar with an iconic restaurant located in Nogales, AZ. Zula’s has been around for 50 years and serves all kinds of excellent food.
They are especially famous for their homemade pies, their Apple Pie in particular. They serve it with Ice Cream and an incredibly delicious warm Cinnamon Sauce. I wanted to duplicate their sauce for a ‘Mile High Apple Pie’ I made this year for Thanksgiving, which we were so pleased to share at my good friend Joyce Prim’s family table. The Cinnamon Sauce was excellent served warm on the pie.
Here is my husband, Jerry, drooling over the Apple Pie we brought to Joyce’s house for the holiday this year.
Back to the Cinnamon Sauce recipe!
Bring 1 1/2 cups water, 3 Tbsp. butter, 1/2 cup lightly packed brown sugar and cinnamon to a boil. It doesn’t look very pretty at this point, but reduce heat and stir to bring the sauce together. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.
Next mix 1 Tbsp. of cornstarch with 1 Tbsp. of water. Stir until you have a smooth paste. Add a little of the hot cinnamon mixture to temper the cornstarch and then add it to the sauce and stir until mixed thoroughly. Simmer for another 4 to 5 minutes.
Remove from the heat and add 2 drops of cinnamon oil. If you don’t have cinnamon oil, cinnamon extract would work well, too to flavor the sauce.
The sauce thickens as it cools. Store in the fridge. Heat for a few seconds in the microwave before serving.
We had sauce left-over so I decided to make my husband Apple Pancakes served with the Cinnamon Sauce. I am a bit of a snob (OK, BIG snob) when it comes to pancake mix vs. homemade pancakes. They are so easy to make and usually much better than a box mix. My friend Bonnie Ungerecht, who is a fabulous cook herself, gave me a box of Kodiak pancake mix and it is surprisingly delicious.
I make these cakes using milk and adding an egg, which increases the protein to a whopping 22 grams! You can also just make them by adding water. Not all pancake mixes are equal and I must say this one is really excellent. Thank you, Bonnie!
To make the Apple Pancakes, saute some apple in butter, a little sugar and a couple dashes of cinnamon. Mix the apple into the Kodiak pancake mix. Add a little more butter in the same pan and fry the Kodiak cakes until they just start to bubble. Flip. Cook a couple more minutes and serve with butter and Cinnamon Sauce.
ENJOY!

I cannot wait to make your cinnamon sauce! I am a cinnamon addict- lol i heavily sprinkle it on my oatmeal before cooking and mix it into my yogurt at lunch. Did you know cinnamon helps control your “sugars? This sauce should be bottled!
You are such a dear! I miss you my friend. Need a big catch up. I also need an Edison update!!! Let me know what you think of the sauce when you make it.
